Words Their Way
Below are some resources to help you with Words Their Way; the video below provides a brief tutorial of terms associated with Words Their Way. The PDF document is a study guide/cheat sheet to assist you with word study at home!
Monday:
1. Together, you can cut out all of the words and pictures and place them in an envelope.
2. Take ONLY the headers out of the envelope (the titles that you can find on the top of the worksheet) and place them on top of a table or the floor. This will be the titles of the sort that your child will be doing for the week.
3. Have your child choose a card out of the envelope and sort it into the correct category. He/she should read the word out loud as they are sorting it. (Continue until all of the words are sorted.)
4. You can ask your child questions about the sorts too!
5. Last, ask your child to read all of the words back to you.
*Once they are done, they can put all of their words and pictures back into their envelope until tomorrow’s activity!
Tuesday:
1. Take ONLY the headers out of the envelope (the titles that you can find on the top of the worksheet) and place them on top of a table or the floor. This will be the titles of the sort that your child will be doing for the week.
2. Today your child will do a “Speed Sort” with their words.
3. You may use a timer or stop watch for this sort to time your son/daughter while they are sorting all of their words as fast as they can. They should be reading the words out loud as they sort them.
4. To make it even more fun, your child can sort several times and try to beat their own time OR a parent can sort too and the child can try to beat the parent’s time! J
*Once they are done, they can put all of their words and pictures back into their envelope until tomorrow’s activity!
Wednesday:
1. Take ONLY the headers out of the envelope (the titles that you can find on the top of the worksheet) and place them on top of a table or the floor. This will be the titles of the sort that your child will be doing for the week.
2. Today your child will do a “blind sort” with their words.
3. The parent will choose a word from the envelope and say the word out loud without letting the child see the word. (Continue until all words are sorted blindly).
4. The child will have to tell the parent which “header” it goes under and then place the word there.
5. Last, ask your child to read all of the words back to you.
*Once they are done, they can put all of their words and pictures back into their envelope until tomorrow’s activity!
Thursday:
1. To prepare for tomorrow’s Spelling test, your child will practice writing each word on paper. They do not need to bring this paper to school, so please keep this at home.
2. PLEASE DO NOT HAVE YOUR CHILD STUDY THESE WORDS OR MEMORIZE THE SPELLING OF THESE WORDS PRIOR TO THIS WRITING ACTIVITY!
3. You will find that, through the sort activities done each day in class and at night for homework, your child will make meaning of the words and be able to successfully write them without previously studying them!
4. Choose a word from the envelope, read the word out loud and ask your child to write it down. Continue until all words are picked from the envelope.
*Note: During Friday’s test, the children will only be tested on 10 of these words at random
